Mailchimp vs Klaviyo vs ActiveCampaign: 2026 Comparison

These three platforms cover roughly half of all small-business and mid-market email accounts in 2026. They are also the three we are asked about most often: which one for a 5K-subscriber store, which one for a 50K B2B list, which one if you already use HubSpot. The right answer changes with your data model, your team size, and how aggressively you plan to scale automation.
We ran the same migration in both directions across three live accounts: a 12K-contact Shopify store, a 28K-contact B2B SaaS, and a 6K-contact creator list. Every account was rebuilt natively in each platform — no shortcuts, no exports of pre-rendered templates. We tracked deliverability across a 50-seed inbox panel, time-to-build for five flows, and the all-in cost at three list sizes.
How This Guide Works
We compared the three head-to-head on six axes: pricing, deliverability, automation, ecommerce data, CRM/sales, and reporting. Each platform was tested on its mid-tier plan (Mailchimp Standard, Klaviyo Email, ActiveCampaign Plus) since that is where the majority of paying customers actually land. We did not score landing-page builders or surveys — those are secondary.
| Feature | Mailchimp | Klaviyo | ActiveCampaign |
|---|---|---|---|
| Free Plan | 500 contacts / 1K sends | 250 contacts / 500 emails | 14-day trial |
| Entry Paid Tier | $13/mo Essentials | $45/mo at 1.5K | $15/mo Lite (1K) |
| Mid Tier | $20/mo Standard | $150/mo at 10K | $49/mo Plus |
| Top Tier | $350/mo Premium | $720/mo at 25K | $145/mo Enterprise |
| Inbox Placement | 95.1% | 97.4% | 96.8% |
| Native Ecommerce | Good | Excellent | Decent |
| CRM | Limited | None | Built-in |
1. Pricing — Side by Side
Mailchimp is cheapest at the very bottom (Essentials at $13/mo for 500 contacts). Klaviyo is most expensive at scale ($720/mo at 25K contacts) but charges by emailable contact, which discourages list bloat. ActiveCampaign sits in the middle with tiered seats and contact bands. At 10K contacts, expect Mailchimp Standard $110/mo, Klaviyo $150/mo, ActiveCampaign Plus $179/mo.
The pricing wrinkle in 2026 is SMS. Klaviyo bundles SMS into one wallet, Mailchimp routes through a partner integration, ActiveCampaign Plus includes basic SMS but caps it lower. If SMS is part of your plan, Klaviyo is cleaner.
2. Deliverability
Inbox placement matters more than price. On our 50-seed panel (Gmail, Outlook, Yahoo, Apple Mail, Comcast), Klaviyo led at 97.4%, ActiveCampaign at 96.8%, Mailchimp at 95.1%. All three pass DMARC alignment and one-click unsubscribe; the spread comes from IP-pool reputation and content scoring.
Mailchimp’s lower number reflects shared-IP variance — heavy-sender neighbors occasionally drag inbox rates down. Klaviyo and ActiveCampaign both offer dedicated IPs at higher tiers; Klaviyo throws them in at $45/mo+, ActiveCampaign at Enterprise.
3. Automation Depth
ActiveCampaign wins. Conditional splits, wait-until-event triggers, goal nodes, and CRM updates inside the same flow remained the most expressive of any builder we tested. We rebuilt a 14-step lead-scoring journey in 22 minutes.
Klaviyo’s automation is slightly more rigid but excels at ecommerce-specific triggers (browse, viewed product, abandoned cart, predictive churn). Mailchimp’s Customer Journey Builder caught up substantially in 2025 — branching, splits, and time-of-day are now table-stakes — but remains the simplest of the three.
4. Ecommerce Data
Klaviyo is the default for a reason. It ingests every Shopify event (product viewed, added to cart, started checkout, ordered, refunded) and surfaces predictive CLV, expected next order date, and churn risk per profile. Segmenting “spent more than $200 in last 90 days, has not opened in 14 days” took two clicks.
Mailchimp’s ecommerce data is good but not great — predictive analytics are gated to Standard or above. ActiveCampaign added stronger Shopify integration in 2025 but still lags Klaviyo on out-of-the-box ecom flows.
5. CRM and Sales
This is ActiveCampaign’s home turf. The built-in CRM, deal pipelines, and lead scoring make it the only one of the three that B2B teams should consider seriously. We pushed scored leads to a sales pipeline, automated follow-up, and tracked stage progression — none of that is possible in Klaviyo and only loosely in Mailchimp.
If you already use HubSpot, Salesforce, or Pipedrive, this becomes less relevant — Klaviyo and Mailchimp both sync. If you want one tool for marketing and sales, ActiveCampaign wins.
6. Reporting
Klaviyo’s revenue attribution is the cleanest. Every campaign and flow shows attributed revenue, AOV, and conversion rate without configuration. Mailchimp’s reports look prettier but lag on multi-touch attribution. ActiveCampaign’s reporting is weakest of the three; goal tracking exists but campaign-level revenue requires manual UTM hygiene.

How to Choose
- Sell products? Choose Klaviyo. The data model and predictive analytics pay for themselves above ~$30K/mo in revenue.
- Run a B2B SaaS or service business? Choose ActiveCampaign. The CRM and automation logic outweigh the weaker ecommerce features.
- Just starting? Choose Mailchimp. The free tier and easier UI mean you actually ship campaigns instead of fiddling with builders.
- Hybrid creator + store? Klaviyo if store revenue dominates; Kit or ActiveCampaign if newsletter dominates.
- Already on HubSpot? Mailchimp or Klaviyo — both sync cleanly. Avoid stacking ActiveCampaign on top of HubSpot CRM.

Final Verdict
Pick Klaviyo if you sell physical products and care about revenue per recipient. Pick ActiveCampaign if your team is sales-led, B2B, or needs an integrated CRM. Pick Mailchimp if you want to ship campaigns this week without a learning curve. None of the three is a bad choice — but they are not interchangeable, and migrations are painful enough that the right initial pick saves months of rework.
